-TV, Public Media North Carolina, seeks a Director of Photography to contribute to internal studio production but mostly field productions. The ideal candidate will be a proficient videographer with expertise in operation of a range of cameras plus have advanced understanding of the documentary production process and general film grammar. The Director of Photography will supervise all studio lighting design and implementation for projects shot in one of two onsite studios (60’ x 70’ and 46’ x 60’). These projects include fixed setups for weekly shows as well as lighting design for specials involving six cameras, multiple talent and risers with guests. The candidate is also expected to supervise lighting on more involved field shoots, such as documentaries with higher production values and off-site panel discussions. An understanding of safe use of high currents in unfamiliar places is essential. This position reports to the Field Production Manager on
-TV’s Production Services team.

SPA Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience related to the area of assignment in a broadcast television, radio and emerging media environment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Thorough knowledge of a wide variety of visual techniques for diverse stylistic presentations. This includes everything from handheld shooting solo to acting as Director of Production on large-crew shoots.
An understanding of visual and audio fundamentals is essential, as well as the application of that understanding to use technology to further a vision.
A deep skill-set gained through production work as a camera operator or videographer but also roles such as lighting director, best boy, grip and company electric, as well as experience shooting with a variety of field cameras, from DSLRs to larger
Ability to plan and execute studio lighting plans for new sets, including drawing plots and safely hanging lights.
Ability to understand film grammar as a conveyance of story through narrative structure and how individual shots contribute to that endeavor.
Ability to use non-linear editing systems such as Premiere Pro.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle is essential.
Ability to make aesthetic judgments regarding production values.
Ability to successfully work with others and communicate ideas.
