Dalton First United Methodist Church is a revitalized and rejuvenated United Methodist Church and an integral part of the greater Dalton, Georgia community. Its music programs grow Christian disciples that can lead others to Christ. We believe music welcomes people, connects them together, helps to build their relationship with Christ, and can send them out to be Christian disciples.
Weekly worship attendance currently averages between 200 – 250 in-person congregants with a wider virtual audience. The Chancel Choir averages 20 – 25 mostly experienced choir members.
Position Summary
The ideal candidate for this position must possess a belief in music in worship as a ministry of the church. This person must have a passion for music of all kinds with an interest in creating and sustaining a dynamic and stimulating church music program for all ages. He/she must be dedicated to working with all age groups and all forms of music ministry – from traditional to contemporary, choirs to soloists, instrumentalists of all skill levels, and any other church, pre-school, or community programs that relate to music and the arts. Consideration will be given to a standalone Director of Music Ministries or a combination Director of Music Ministries/Organist.
Organ Summary
Our Sanctuary has a 3 manual and pedal pipe organ with 50 ranks. The organ, Opus 16 was built in 2016 by Parkey Organ Builders and utilized a number of stops from the 1982 Austin organ. The Great/Pedal Divisions are unenclosed behind facades with the Swell and Choir Divisions enclosed in separate expression boxes. The organ was part of the renovation to the sanctuary completed in 2016.

Understands and agrees with United Methodist theology, doctrine, and ecclesiology
Is able to design meaningful worship and inspire excellence in all areas of music ministry
Believes in music ministry as tool for congregational growth, with an emphasis on community involvement
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in music with preference given to church music and choral conducting
Minimum of 5 years music ministry experience with varied worship and musical styles
Proficient in technological aspects of music ministry
Knowledge of scripture and its application in worship design
Knowledge of hymnody with emphasis on Wesleyan texts
Documented history supporting career and personal development through continuing education and training
Capabilities
Effectively manage time and resources
Effectively organize, plan, and execute any music event whether for DFUMC or community outreach
Effectively manage a budget which includes responsibility for performance assets, music, and music equipment
Demonstrate efficient rehearsal technique with ability to teach healthy choral skills and develop sophisticated choral sound
Be able to inspire, lead, and cultivate volunteerism
Demonstrate a professional work ethic
Responsibilities
Musical preparation for Sunday worship services
Design appropriate worship with input of church staff, Worship, and Music Committees
Prepare all aspects of worship (includes preparation of Chancel Choir, hymn selection, handbells, instrumental ensembles, soloists, children’s and youth choirs, keyboard accompaniment, and other liturgical elements)
Supervise choral programs
Chancel Choir, Children's Graded Choir Program, Youth Choir
Supervise instrumental programs
Handbell Choir, Orffestra, and paid instrumentalists
Monitor and schedule maintenance on church instruments as needed
Preparation of Festival and Community Events
Plan and prepare for special days of the liturgical calendar
Plan and prepare L. N. “Smiley” Gregg Annual Community Fund-raising Concert
Assist with non-worship related music needs
Sounds of Joy Senior Adult Community Choir, daytime children's educational programs
Infant baptisms, weddings, and funerals
